Practicalities

Ferries from Ende on Flores dock at the harbour on the east of the bay, a short walk from town. Pelni ferries arrive about 8km away to the west, and are met by bemos running to the hotels in town. The offices for Pelni ships and ferry services are both down at the bottom of the hill near the east pier, but are unreliable. The KM Awu and KM Wilis both call in here . The airstrip is about 10km to the southeast on the road to Rende: if there are no buses waiting, head out to the main road and flag one down. The Merpati office is at Jl Sukarno 4; Bouraq are by Pasar Inpres, behind the bus terminal.

The new bus terminal lies 4km to the west of town; catch bemo #3 from Pasar Inpres (Rp450). For buses to Waikabubak (Rp6500), don't buy tickets from the touts without first finding out which bus will leave first. Of the three banks in town, only the BNI will change travellers' cheques - it's 100m north of the Inpres terminal. The main post office with poste restante is at Jl Dr Sutomo 21, the 24-hour Telkom on Jalan Tjut Nya Dien.
