Arrival, Getting Around And Information

Flights arrive at Hasanuddin Airport , 25km northeast of the city. Taxis to the town centre take forty minutes and cost a fixed fare of Rp23,000 (pay at the booth on the left of the exit hall). From 6.30am to 6.30pm you can also opt for a pete-pete (bemo; Rp700) or bus (Rp1500) from just beyond the terminal car park to Pasar Sentral.

Makassar's two main bus stations are both about 5km and a Rp350 pete-pete ride from the centre. Coming in from Rantepao will land you east at Terminal Panaikang on the Maros road. Most south-coast buses arrive at Terminal Tamalate on Jalan Gowa Raya (an extension of Jalan Sudirman), but some use Terminal Mallengkeri , also on Jalan Gowa Raya, or Sungguminasa , 10km southeast of Makassar.

The Pelni harbour is less than 1km northwest of the Pasar Sentral on Jalan Nusantara, served by becaks and taxis. Other boats dock at Paotere Harbour , 3km north of the centre; becaks will take you into town for around Rp1500.

Bemos here are called pete-pete , charge Rp350-700, and terminate either at Pasar Sentral or near Medan Karebosi. Shout your destination at drivers, who will either wave you on board or point you to other vehicles. Makassar's becak drivers are hard to shake off if you don't want them and often ignorant of your destination if you do; a fare of Rp500 per kilometre is reasonable.

The fairly useless tourist information office is inside Fort Rotterdam (Mon-Thurs 7am-2pm, Fri 7-11am, Sat 7am-1pm).
