Shopping

The most modern and popular shopping centres are the Surabaya Plaza (daily 10am-9.30pm) on Jalan Pemuda, and Tunjungan Plaza, Jl Jend Basuki Rachmat 8-12 (daily 10am-10pm) - and both places have branches of Toko Gunung Agung, which stocks English-language books; Tunjungan Plaza has designer outlets, and a branch of the well-known Batik Keris, which specializes in textiles and souvenirs. The Siola department store and supermarket, Jalan Tunjungan 1, is also good. For a more traditional shopping experience, try Pasar Atum , a two-storey concrete local market, packed with stalls selling pretty much everything; bemo M will get you here from the east end of Jalan Genteng Kali in the city centre. Other recommended bookshops include those at the Sheraton Surabaya Hotel and Hyatt Regency, which have the best selection of English-language titles in town, and Gramedia, Jl Jend Basuki Rachmat 95. Mirota, Jl Sulawesi 24, sells secondhand books, and it is also a great souvenir outlet for carvings, basketware, leatherwork, furniture, paintings, batik and silver. Sarinah, Jl Tunjungan 7, has a souvenir department on the second floor with a huge range of textiles, woodcarvings and assorted craft items. Lastly, don't miss Pinguin, at Jl Taman Naviton 45, a multi-room antique/junk shop and the most rewarding place for a rummage in Surabaya.
