City Transport And Information

Three types of public buses operate in the city, with routes indicated by letters. They stop only at designated places, which are often signified by blue bus-stop signs. The most useful ordinary bus service (Rp300) is the "C" route, which runs from Bungusarih past Tunjungan Plaza, in through the centre of the city and up to Tanjung Perak, passing conveniently close to the post office on the way; the more luxurious P1 and P2 buses (Rp500-700) cover the same route; as do deluxe air-con buses PAC1 and PAC2 (Rp1000). There are also plenty of metered taxis : a trip within the city centre will cost Rp2000-3000. Crossing the road in Surabaya is so hair-raising that there are special long poles with red dots on them at some traffic lights - you hold them high towards the traffic to let drivers know you're there.

The most useful tourist office is at Jl Jend Basuki Rachmat 119-121 opposite the Hyatt (Mon-Thurs & Sat 7am-2pm, Fri 7-11am; tel 031/5344710). One of the best places to get information is the losmen Bamboe Denn , which gives guests up-to-date transport timetables.
