Shopping

While Jakarta has no particular indigenous craft of its own, the capital isn't a bad place to go souvenir shopping . The antiques market on Jalan Surabaya, one block west of Cikini station in Jakarta's Menteng district, sells fine silver jewellery, and traditional Javanese wooden trunks and other pieces of furniture, as well as old records. The entire third floor of the Sarinah department store is given over to souvenirs, with wayang kulit and wayang golek puppets, leather bags and woodcarvings a speciality. A similar selection of souvenirs can be found at Ancol's Pasar Seni, alongside paintings and woodcarvings. Hadi Handicraft in the Indonesia Plaza specializes in good-quality, reasonably priced, wooden statues and ornaments, mainly from Central Java. There are three reasonable souvenir shops on Jalan Pasar Baru, north of the GPO: Toko Bandung at no. 16b, the Ramayana Art Shop at no. 17, and the Irian Art Shop at 16a. The fourth floor of Sarinah's is devoted to good-quality batik clothes. A similar selection can be found at the branch of Batik Kris in the Indonesia Plaza, the most exclusive store of its kind in the capital.

For new books , the Times Bookshop in the Indonesia Plaza (under the Hyatt) has the widest selection, and the fifth floor of the Sarinah department store is also worth a browse. For secondhand books, visit Cynthia's bookshop on Jl Jaksa, or the small store in the corner of New Memories Caf?.
