Walking On Lawu
It is possible to walk all the way from Candi Ceto to Candi Sukuh, and from there to the waterfall at Tawangmangu in around five hours. There is not enough time to do this as a day-trip from Solo, however, as it can take up to four hours just to get to Ceto, and the last bus back to Solo leaves Tawangmangu at 5pm. Day-trippers should miss out Candi Ceto and join the trail at Candi Sukuh for the final leg to the waterfall. The walk between Ceto and Sukuh is a pleasant three-hour ramble, passing first through large fields, then through the pine forest shrouding the summit of Gunung Lawu. The path begins 200m below Ceto, where a small track branches left from the road towards the fields. This path is very difficult to follow, and you will probably need to ask the workers in the field for directions. After about an hour you arrive at the forest, where again you will probably need help in finding the correct path. Once you have, following the trail is straightforward. The two-hour stroll from Sukuh to the waterfall at Tawangmangu, over gently undulating fields and foothills, is the most rewarding walk on Lawu and fairly easy to follow.
